There is no cost for basic access to the corpora from English-Corpora.org. But there are several benefits of having an
academic license for your university (or other
organization), including the following:
1. Classes and academic departments can have more than 250 searches (combined) each day
2. Users will not see the messages that appear every 10-15 searches (to suggest upgrading to a paid license)
3. Individual users will have more searches each day -- 400 for faculty, 200 for students (compared to the normal 200 and 50)

Obtaining a license: overview
1. Select a license (choose the number of users and number of years).
2. Pay for the license.
3. As soon as the payment is made, you will receive an email with a link
to a web page where you will enter the IP address ranges for your university
(e.g. 123.45.*.*) and/or the password for the license that your students will use. That's
all you need to do -- it takes just a minute or two to set things up.
4. Students and faculty can join the license by logging on from a
computer in the IP range that you have specified, or they can
enter the name of your university and the password that you've chosen.
(Users only have to do this one time).
After doing
this, 1) they will have expanded access 2) users will not see the messages
every 10-15 queries and 3) users will not be blocked if they jointly do 250
queries per day.
Bottom line: if you can pay by PayPal, you can have the license up and
running 5-10 minutes from now.

is much less than for many other corpora. (More information)
By way of comparison, the
annual rates for an academic license from

about four to five times as much:

Obtaining a license: method of payment
There are three ways to pay for the license:
1. Pay now via PayPal. In this case, your academic license will be active in just 2-3 minutes after payment. Note: you will need an
individual account before you get a "academic / group" account (registration for the individual account is free and it takes 1-2 minutes).
2. Pay later via PayPal. You fill out a short form indicating what license you want. We then send a "Request for Payment" from PayPal to
the email address that you indicate. Note: this is a good option if someone other than you needs to make the actual payment.
3. Pay via wire transfer. It is best to use this option only if #1 and #2 won't work, since it's a bit complicated and it can take 2-4 days
to be finalized.
There are pages that provide more details on each of these options after you
select which license you want.

Managing a license (for administrators)
Once the license is paid for, you will be sent
a link to manage the license. You will see information on your license (
1 below), and you can select a group password for the license (
2 ) or specify a range of IP addresses for the users (
3 ). You can also see a list of all users of the license (
4 ) -- by email address and showing the number of days that each person has used
the corpora (for whatever time period you specify)

Do individuals still need to log in with their own account?
Yes, users need to first log on to their own individual account (this
account is free and it takes them just 30-40 seconds to set up). The main reason for
this is that we need to know how many users are coming from each university,
and the only way to determine this is by having people log in with their own
individual account.
If they are using IP-based access, there is nothing that
they themselves need to do after logging on to their individual account.
If they are using the "group password" method, they will need to enter that
password just once.
|
How are users counted?
Universities can obtain a
license for 30 users, or an unlimited number of users.
-- For IP-based logins, it it is the total number of distinct users from the specified IP addresses in
during the period of the license.
-- For password-based logins, it is the total number of distinct users who have
"joined" the license via a password,
who log in during the period of the license.
Example: suppose you have a 30 person license that
goes from September 1 through the following August 31. Suppose also that
21 students join the license in September, for a class that runs from
September to December. Because 21 of the 30 licenses have already been
"used", only 9 more are available for January - August. So if you have
another class from January - April with 18 students, you wouldn't have
enough licenses for that class. The bottom line is that it's probably
best to err on the side of caution (i.e. get a license for an unlimited number of
users, rather than just 30 users) so
that you don't run out of licenses. |

Join license: by IP address
NOTE: Before joining the academic
license (via IP address), you must first
log in to one of the corpora (ANY of the corpora, e.g. COCA or iWeb) with your individual email and password. Even though you will be
using the "group account", there still needs to be a way to track who
has done individual queries, so that you can link to and re-use past
queries (using "history", after logging in).
You can tell that you are logged in when
the "person" icon in the upper right-hand corner changes from yellow
to
green
(or red, if it's not recognizing you as part of the
academic license). In addition, on the SEARCH page, the message
will change to
.
Please make
sure you are actually first logged in to your individual account before
you report any problems to us. |
1. First, check on this page to
see if it recognizes your IP address as belonging to the academic license. If it
doesn't, you're either not on campus, or the administrator for your academic
license has not entered the right IP address.
2. Assuming #1 is OK, when you log in you should
see a message that says the following (followed the date on which the license
ends).
...
3. If you later see any messages asking you to
upgrade to a premium account, or saying that your class has done too many
queries, then check again to see if
somehow it's not recognizing your IP address. If that's still OK, then your
session may have "timed out" after half an hour of inactivity. Go back to the
portal page, click on a corpus, and start over (including logging in).

Join license: by password

you report any problems to us. |
Note: this only has to be done once. When you come
back on subsequent days, you will already be part of the license.
1. If you haven't yet selected your
university, do so via:
Institution |
SELECT
UNIVERSITY |
2. Once you have selected your
university, you will then see the following, where the name of your university,
as well as the city and country of the university will be displayed in the
green field.
Institution |
Your University (City, Country) |
3. Simply
enter the group password
and click "Submit".
Contact the administrator for the license if you don't know what it is.
Please note that the password has to be exactly the same -- even case sensitivity (e.g.
ourPassword vs OurPassword vs ourpassword).
Once you have done steps #1 through #4 (and
remember that you only have to do this once), you will then be using the
academic license. You can make sure that you really are using the license,
because you will see the following message after logging in:
Institution |
Your University (City, Country) |
Status /
license |
You are logged in as part of the academic
license for your university, which will expire on [expiration date] |

3. If you see a message that you've done too many queries, even after successfully logging in to the academic license,
please have your teacher visit this page, and then send the requested information to us.
